My new favourite illustrator

It's been quite a long while since I've posted here on my Uni research blog.
Well let's get straight to it.
I've recently become aware of Yuko Shimizu and her work is amazing. You can see the traditional manga influences and her textured brush strokes and colours are great.

It's time for another paper toys progress report. Here's some  roughs for my paper characters.

My paper toy idea is a collection of LARPers (Live Action Role Play).

There will be their normal bodies/outfits/professions, then their LARP personalities/costumes will slide onto the model.

Here, is a shot of my first model that actually sort of works. Jeremy a disrespected CEO who becomes Gadfox the powerful bathrobe Wizard.  His hat is yet to be completed, as I'm rather bad at making cones to an accurate size.
The model works quite well, but I need more accuracy and the costume part needs adjusting by about 1mm.
I originally intended to have it with moving arms, but that proved rather difficult to construct and still allow for the costume parts.

Stacking

This new brief has got me thinking about toys obviously and I reminded myself of a game I played last summer called Stacking, where you play as a small russian doll, and you control other dolls by jumping inside them. You solve puzzles by stacking into the correct characters,as they each have special abilities.

Anyway, I liked the character design for it.

Momot Paper Toys

For our latests brief we've been asked to create a set of 5 paper toys, and this is some of what I've looked at today relating to this new brief.

Skiing

A selection of thumbnails for my latest project in which we were asked to produce a scale of 8 stages for a given theme. My theme was skiing and below is what I handed in, completed using Illustrator. I possibly could have painted and got a better quality and style.

Extreme Skiing

About a week ago I just happened to watch two documentaries on extreme skiing, Blizzard of Aaahhs and  Steep and for my new brief this week I am to create a scale of degrees for skiing. Anyway here's a clip from Blizzard of Aaahhs seeing as its relevant now.

Rob Ryan

The paper cuts of Rob Ryan have once again caught my attention.

Seeing Double Development

Here's part of a page I'm working on. On the theme of identical twins, the idea behind this one is twins having to share their possessions, and these two identical boys are fighting over a Teddy.
I'm thinking I may try out digital colouring and adding textures.

Tommy Lee Edwards

I like his colours and tone use. These are from Turf, a book he illustrated for Jonathan Ross.

Lucinda Rogers use of ink

Well, I'm back at University now and back into a heavy back breaking workload. But to get to the point of this post; I've been looking at Lucinda Rogers after Monday's lecture.

I'm liking her use of varying line thickness, it's quite expressive. Also on Monday I was made aware that she's been influenced by Paul Hogarth.

Sneaker Freaker

I've been focusing on sneakers lately, the culture, the looks, the style, collecting. etc. All in aid of our latest, and last of the semester, brief. I've been trying to work out an aesthetic for my exhibition poster and banners.

Here's the resulting work so far.

Heels and Ribbons

During my week researching shoes, I found 17th Century Men's shoes quite interesting. Why were men wearing high heels, and why were they decorated like women's shoes?

Early in this period, heeled boots were the fashion, but after the French King Louis XIV, men started desiring shapely legs. (as clearly shown in his portrait)

Footwear

For the current brief we have been asked to conduct primary research on shoes. One aspect of our primary research is photography and here are some of the photographs I have produced.

Olivier Kugler

After Tony showed some examples of his work in Monday's lecture, I sampled more of this fine gentleman's artwork.

Keegan

I've been looking at Jonathan Keegan for a while now, and he was mentioned in another lecture today. I really like his style and he's a piece I found funny.

It's 10 minutes until my deadline for this and my crit, so I've got the time to upload my finished infographic  before it is criticised.

Friday draws near
